Paul Jehu Barringer, Sr.

Paul Jehu Barringer, Sr. was born in 1884 in Chatham County, NC.  He was the son of John Barringer, and immigrant from Wuertemberg, Germany, and Mary Ann Eliza Womble.

He graduated from Trinity Park School and Trinity College in Durham, NC, and spent his adult life in the agri-business, having mills in both Raeford and Sanford, NC.

Mr. Barringer had a strong interest in local history, serving as President of the Lee County Historical Society.  He was a charter member of the North Carolina Society of Historians, Inc.

A historian in the oral tradition, he was a true Southern raconteur, one who could, it has been said, 'weave a tale about every tree and crossroad!'  He was a charming man with a wide-range of interests and knowledge.

Paul Jehu Barringer, Sr. died in Sanford in 1967 at the age of 83.

We are honored to name our award of excellence in his memory.
