Robert Bruce Cooke

Robert Bruce Cooke was born in Swepsonville, NC, in 1902.  He was married to Aylene Edwards Cooke, who worked as a librarian when the couple lived in Rutherfordton, NC.

He and his wife were very active in many historical and art associations within the state, especially in the North Carolina Society of Historians, Inc.

He was elected President of the group on December 4, 1971, and again in 1972.  His wife, Aylene was elected President in 1978, and was the 3rd Vice-President in 1982.  She remained active with the organization long after her husband's death.

Mr. Cooke was ambitious and always seemed to be seeking a better position within the textile industry.  He held positions in various textile mills in Virginia and both Carolina states.  In 1941, he became a supervisor at the Erwin Cotton Mills in Durham, NC.  He retired from this mill in 1963, and resided in Durham until his death in 1973.

The ROBERT BRUCE COOKE FAMILY HISTORY BOOK AWARD was established in 1981 to honor his memory.
