McDaniel Lewis

McDaniel Lewis was born in 1894 in Asheville, NC.  He grew up in Kinston, NC; graduated from UNC, Chapel Hill in 1926; was in World War I and rose to the rank of Captain, and, then he started his own business of investment banking in Greensboro, NC.  An early specialty of McDaniel Lewis was 'bonds.'  He was the 'pioneer' of municipal bond issues in NC.

McDaniel Lewis was a founding member of our Society as well as a member of many fraternal and civic organizations, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Greensboro.

Hid deep and abiding love for history and his State are demonstrated in many ways.  Although he never wrote an award-winning book or a story, he contributed to them.  He was a charter member of the Greensboro Historical Museum.  He served as Chairman of the Board of the North Department of Archives and History (as a member from 1946 to 1965), and was a founding member of the American Association for State and Local History; but, his active role in finding and preserving any and all things pertaining to our history represented his most important contribution.

THE McDANIEL LEWIS HISTORIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD was established in his memory on 10 November 1979.
