Garland P. Stout

 
Garland P. Stout was born on December 20, 1907, in Siler City, NC.  He attended the Siler City Public Schools; NC State University (Business Administration); International Correspondence School (Engineering 1953-54); and, the Interstate Training Service (Plastics).

He was married to Lucy Ellen Russell and of this union were born three children:  Garland Herbert Stout, Ellen Russell Stout, and Ava Jane Stout.

He was a Methodist and very proud to be descendant of the Quakers.

Garland's hobbies concentrated on genealogy, history and music . . . with great emphasis on historical mapping.

He became nationally well-known for his Stout Maps.  He researched, indexed and drew a historical research map for each county in the State of North Carolina.

This endeavor was passed along to Society Director, Chuck Ketchie of Charlotte, NC, through Carolina Maps By Mail.

Garland served our society in the capacity of president, secretary / treasurer, director, archivist and historian; and, he was our 1983 Historian of the Year, then and honorary life consultant to our group.

Garland died on June 11, 1988.  He was an inspiration to all who knew him or worked with him, and his contributions to NC history will always be appreciated and treasured.

THE GARLAND P. STOUT PUBLISHERS AWARD was established to honor his memory.
