Allen T. Hyde

 

The Linville Gorge Hiker's Guide

 

On October 11, 2008, Allen T. Hyde was presented the Willie Parker Peace Award for his book, The Linville Gorge Hiker's Guide, which gives an introduction to both the history and geology of the the gorge.  It is an "informal guide written to accommodate one day visitors as well as experienced and knowledgeable hikers.  This book includes "over 50 miles of trails in the Linville Gorge; about 20 miles more than the standard map."  This is an invaluable resource to the hiker or geologist who is interested in the Linville Gorge!

 

Mr. Hyde  graduated from Isothermal Community College in 1976 and UNC, Chapel Hill, 1in 1978.  He is also the author of Inflation: An Approach to Common Sense (1971

Local authors receive book awards

At its Oct. 11 annual meeting in Hickory, the North Carolina Society of Historians awarded Larry R. Clark and Brenda H. Messer of Morganton and Allen T. Hyde of Jonas Ridge, the Willie Parker Peace History Book award.
Clark, a well-known local author received the award for his, "Burke County, North Carolina — Historic Tales from the Gateway to the Blue Ridge." While Messer and co-author Wayne A. Shaw published two important library references, "Haywood County, NC, Marriage Records for 1808-1903 Vol. 1 and 1904-36 Vol. 2.
Hyde received his award for "The Linville Gorge Hiker's Guide," which includes sections on local history and geology. He hopes the award will encourage other members of the community to submit their personal research so that it can become a permanent record in the library and across the state.
