Awards

Membership, Awards and Nominations

  • Deadline for submitting entries is June 30.
  • Membership in the North Carolina Society of Historians is NOT a requirement for making a nomination, submitting an entry nor for receiving an award. We do, however, welcome the support of new members.
  • When sending material, please submit ONE (1) copy of the published work. All nominated books, articles, newsletters, videos and other published material must be original works.
  • If you wish to submit an unpublished manuscript, reprint or previously published work, please send a description ONLY to the president of the NCSH for consideration before mailing the work. You will be notified as to the work's eligibility.
  • Entries will NOT be returned; therefore, do NOT submit your only copy!
  • Nominations must be accompanied by the proper ENTRY FORM(S). These forms are available online in the FORMS section on this site. Forms are also available by writing to the society address.
  • No entry fee is charged and anyone may submit a nomination or entry.
  • Only non-residents, should they be an award recipient, may request their award be mailed to them.
  • Award winners residing in the State of North Carolina, may have someone accept for them if they are unable to personally accept the award.
  • Award winners will be notified in September.
  • Awards for winning entries will be presented at the annual meeting.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS CATEGORY CRITERIA

[1] PUBLICATION AWARD
These awards are given to encourage the writing and publication of:

  • Historical or biographical newspaper or magazine articles. Articles must be regarding some phase of local, regional or state history, or the biography of a native North Carolinian.
  • Publications dealing mainly with association/society meetings and social events, routine activities, as well as activities of the membership in general. They may be of any length, from one page to many.
  • Publications devoted primarily to the publication of historical facts, documents or records in order to disseminate the historical or genealogical information within them.

[2] MUSEUM AWARD
These awards are given to encourage museums housing significant, interesting and informative historical/ genealogical data, artifacts or collections; and/or are offering public educational programs, tours, demonstrations, etc. with regard to North Carolina history. Works-in-progress are eligible.

[3] HISTORICAL BOOK AWARD
These awards are given to encourage the writing and publication of the history of a North Carolina county, institution or individual:

  • Well-crafted, in-depth studies and histories of NC families; . This category is open to all who are writing about NC. The writer need not be a resident of the State of NC.
  • Significant works of fiction based upon actual historical events, places and/or individuals in NC history.
  • In-depth historical accounts of the founding, growth and development of religious movements, houses of worship, or religious institutions within NC. Submissions must be in book form. Writer need not be a resident of the State of NC.

[4] ORGANIZATION AWARD
These awards are presented to local, regional and state historical, genealogical and/or preservation societies which are making a significant contribution to the accumulation and preservation of North Carolina history.

[5] PUBLISHERS AWARD
These awards are given to North Carolina publishers which are dedicating special emphasis toward the collection, preservation and/or publication of local, regional or state history.

[6] MULTIMEDIA AWARD
These awards are given to people promoting NC history or genealogy through poetry, historical plays, videos, oral histories, music, quilts, etc. [Be creative!] The entrant does not have to be a resident of the State of NC.

[7] PRESIDENTS AWARD
Only one award is given in this category per year. It is the NCSH’s current President’s choice. Those qualifying for consideration must have had a winning entry during the current year...winning by unanimous decision of their category’s panel of judges. From those receiving an award by unanimous decision, one is chosen for the above award by the President.

[8] AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Special awards given to those doing outstanding or unusual work on behalf of NC history, genealogy or preservation. These entrants “fall between the cracks” of the above award categories and the Historians of the Year Awards. Anyone can be nominated for this award as long as their work, labor, efforts have benefitted NC history.

[9] STUDENT HISTORIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Student Historian Award is open to students in 4th through 12th grades. The nomination deadline for the Student Historian Award is September 15.

[10] HISTORIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award is presented to an individual who is contributing, in some very special manner, to preserving or perpetuating some aspect of North Carolina history.

ENTRY FORMS FOR ALL THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED CATEGORIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE FORMS PAGE. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO MAKE COPIES OF THESE FORMS FOR MULTIPLE ENTRIES. THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE INVOLVED. 

CUT-OFF DATES: 
JUNE 30 IS THE CUT-OFF DATE FOR ALL ENTRIES. ENTRIES MUST BE IN THE SOCIETY’S OFFICE NO LATER THAN THE ABOVE CUT-OFF DATES TO QUALIFY FOR THE CURRENT YEAR.

AWARDS FOR WINNING ENTRIES WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET. ANY WINNER NOT BEING ABLE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT MAY SEND A REPRESENTATIVE IN HIS/HER STEAD.
