The D. T. Smithwick Newspaper/ Magazine Article Awards The D. T. Smithwick Newspaper/ Magazine Article Awards are given to encourage the writing and publication of historical or biographical newspaper articles. Articles entered in this category must be regarding some phase of local, regional or state history, or the biography of a native North Carolinian. The entrant does not have to be a resident of the State of North Carolina. In 2008 there was 520 entries with 28 winners in The D. T.
